Titanium dioxide is a pigment form of titanium produced as a white powder sourced from natural minerals such as ilmenite, rutile and slag. Other sources of titanium dioxide include beach sand deposits, which occurs along the coastlines of the United States, India, South Africa and Australia. It is mainly used to scatter light, as it absorbs none of the incident light in the visible region of the spectrum. Apart from these properties, titanium dioxide possesses good thermal stability, resistance to ultraviolet degradation & chemical attacks and provides whiteness, opacity, durability, stability, hiding power and brightness to appliances. It is used in various industries such as coatings, paints, plastics, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, printing inks, paper, textiles, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC) and food industry.
Titanium dioxide pigment is generally manufactured to convert impure feedstock ore into the pure white pigment. It can be manufactured by either of the two processes: Sulfate Process and Chloride Process.
The Asia Pacific region is a major contributor in the supply and demand of titanium dioxide market supported by low cost of production and increased use of titanium dioxide in various end markets and in major emerging economies such as Japan, China and India.
The global titanium dioxide market is expected to grow with increasing construction spending, increasing plastic production, growing urban population, accelerating economic growth and paints and coatings industry. Key trends of this market includes growing demand in flexible packaging market, industry consolidation and increasing shift towards hydrometallurgical production process. However, there are some factors which can hinder growth of the market including rising titanium dioxide prices, stringent regulations and dominance of calcium carbonate.
